Jigawa environmental agency evacuates 50,000 tonnes of waste

The Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA) said it disposed over 50,000 metric tonnes of waste in the 26 Local Government Areas of the state in 2019.

Acting Managing Director of the agency, Alhaji Umar Amadu, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigerian (NAN), on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 in Dutse, the state capital.

Amadu disclosed that the agency had conducted waste and drain clearance exercise at designated solid waste collection sites, streets, markets, hospitals and schools in urban and rural settlements.

He said the exercise was designed to promote good waste management, hygiene and sanitation as well as improve public health.

According to him, the agency also conducted fumigation exercises in each of the council areas to curb malaria.

Amadu noted that part of the mandate of the agency was to conduct waste clearance and environmental protection activities in the 26 local councils with exception of Dutse, which is being managed by the Dutse Capital Development Authority (DCD)

He added: “JISEPA will continue to sensitise the people on the need to keep a clean environment, imbibe good personal hygiene and sanita habits.

“I call on the people to desist from indiscriminate dumping of waste in residential areas and waterways”.

The director reiterated commitment to ensure effective waste management and protect the environment.
