This was contained in a statement by Mr Mukaila Sanusi, spokesman for the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development (MPPUD), on Friday in Lagos.

The statement said the remark was made during the Building Energy Efficiency Code (BEEC) Awareness Creation workshop held in Lagos for construction stakeholders.

It further said in order to achieve energy conservation in construction, NESP held a Building Energy Efficiency Code (BEEC) Awareness Creation Workshop for professionals in the built environment sector in Lagos State.

“To further promote the nationwide use of energy efficiency measures in the building sector, NESP is supporting the state-level adoption of the Code.

“As a result, Lagos State is currently piloting the adoption and implementation of the BEEC to showcase the benefits of designing and constructing energy efficient buildings in Nigeria,” said the statement.

It added that the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development (MPPUD), with funding by both the EU and German government within the framework of NESP, carried out the BEEC workshop.

It listed participants to include building professionals’ bodies, the academia, private developers and insurance companies in Lagos State.

“The BEEC, which specifies the minimum requirements to achieve energy efficiency in building design and construction, was developed and launched at the Federal level in 2017,” it said.

Mr Duke Benjamin, the Head of Programme, NESP, expressed the agency’s readiness to support Lagos towards the adoption of BEEC.

“The BEEC, when adopted, has the potential to achieve at least 40 per cent energy savings for both commercial and residential buildings in Lagos State.

“NESP is also willing to support other states interested in adopting the BEEC to their existing building regulations,” he said.

Dr Idris Salako, Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, told participants that energy efficiency presented an ideal opportunity for professionals in the built environment to develop their own technical expertise.

He said this was not only because of its global trend, but in terms of Lagos State’s socio-economic vision and contributions towards a cleaner, healthier built environment for all.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Abiola Kosegbe, urged building professionals to use the knowledge gained on BEEC to drive policies to improve building and environmental performance in Lagos State.

She said, “The workshop aims to sensitise building professionals and private developers on the benefits of the BEEC and enhance their understanding of energy efficiency measures to encourage the application of the BEEC requirements in their practices.”

NESP is a technical assistance initiative co-funded by the EU and the German government and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Power.

It aims to foster investments in the Nigerian renewable energy and energy efficiency sector.
